Great Day in Melk and the Wachau
We had a wonderful full day with Marco, visiting the wonderful Melk Abbey and enjoying a small sample of the Wachau wines. Although booked on a small group tour, it ended up as a private tour which made it a relaxing trip and obviously we had lots of room to spread out in the van. As a winter tour it starts at Melk, moves onto lunch in Melk Altstadt and then onto the Wachau. The abbey is a beautiful building with views out to the Danube and our local guide gave us an excellent insight into its history and its occupants. We then enjoyed a hearty lunch at a local family restaurant before heading out to Lagler winery in Spitz where we tasted some lovely Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings. It was then onto Dürnstein for an amble through the charming old streets (sadly most closed as it was a Saturday afternoon out of season ) and onto the Vinothek for some more tasting. We thoroughly enjoyed the wines and we managed to safely transport a few back to the UK. All in all, although it wasn’t the best day weatherwise for taking in the views, its an excellent way to spend a day if you are in Vienna for more than a weekend. We would definitely use Marco and the team at Vienna a la Carte again.

Hidden Wachau Valley (wine-tasting) Small-Group Tour
This is a very pleasant trip - the Wachau valley is lovely. Driver/guide was very knowledgeable and vehicle was comfortable. The driver/guide took a couple detours off the main road so that you could get a feel of the small villages and steep vineyards. Tours are up to 8 people; we were a group of five. The Wachau valley produces mostly dry white, and the guide does a nice job of trying to assess the groups "taste" and selecting bottles that head in that direction. In the summer, the trip ends with a boat ride from Spitz to Melk. It is clear that you do not go into the abby, though apparently this is not clear to some people that go on the trip. From what I could tell, the boat ride from Krems to Spitz looks like it may be more scenic, but it was still lovely. There was a nice amount of free time in Durnstein to climb up to the castle, or to walk through town and down along the river (the latter our preferred option). The "Wieser Wachau" store in town sells local products - infused gins, whiskeys, schnapps, jams and delicious roasted apricot kernels with salt and chili. The only thing I would change would be to have just a little bit of time in Weissenkirchen to see the village - though it would have required lengthening the overall trip. If you are up to it - definitely consider the Wachau Valle bike tour option.
