We know at Vienna a la carte that your experience of a city begins and ends with where you lay your head each night after all the exciting experiences you’ve had in Vienna.

Actually, it’s often underestimated how big a part your hotel plays in the experience you have during your city stay.

But booking the right hotel for your holiday in Vienna can be difficult when you don’t know the city. That’s why we’ve put together this list of the hotels that stand out from the crowd, and that are centrally located.

Here are 5 hotels (for all budgets) that will not only act as a comfortable place to sleep and unwind during your stay, but will add to your Vienna experience.

FOR THE LUXURY TRAVELLER

Park Hyatt Vienna

Where: Am Hof 2, 1010

Centrally located in a magnificently grand piece of architecture is the Park Hyatt Vienna. This luxurious option of a hotel is housed in a building that lived a former life as a bank on a cobblestoned square in the heart of Vienna. The evidence of its former life is what lends it such character, from the pool that’s set in what used to be the bank’s vault, to the restaurant housed in the cashier hall. Marble pillars, and hand-carved wooden panelling throughout the hotel gives it an classy vibe, and each tier of rooms possess their own unique and opulent design, rich in detail.

Most rooms offer a picture perfect view of Vienna’s old town, while the spa is included in most room prices. If you get thirsty during your stay, the class act bar downstairs serves up some of the best craft cocktails in the city. The room rates may be high here, but so is the quality of the experience this hotel offers.

FOR THE MEDIUM BUDGET TRAVELLER (WHO LIKES CLASS MIXED WITH QUIRKINESS)

Grand Ferdinand

Where: Schubertring 10–12, 1010

The taxidermy French horse at the entrance encapsulates the flavour of the Grand Ferdinand – well-curated classy design, with a touch of quirk thrown in. This unique boutique hotel is perched on the magnificent boulevard that encircles the old city of Vienna, which you’ll love walking out onto every morning once you manage to drag yourself out of your tastefully designed room (think that chesterfield couch look gone modern). Their standard rooms are surprisingly affordable, and they also have a dorm room option where fancy bunk beds can be slept in for a low 30 € per night. Plus, you’ll be eating breakfast in their rooftop dining area. Not a bad way to start the day, right?

Hotel König von Ungarn

Where: Schulerstraße 10, 1010

Imagine waking up in a room that you could imagine being in a Wes Anderson film, and you can imagine the design of this old-timer of a hotel, the Hotel König von Ungarn.

In every room of the Hotel König von Ungarn, there’s a gloriously unique picture that comes together. Weird wall paper that matches the bed sheets, cleaning staff wearing French maid outfits, and a lobby with an indoor garden – this historic hotel is one of a kind. We say ‘historic,’ because this is one of Vienna’s oldest hotels, dating back to 1746. And while there are a few newly renovated rooms, the eccentric old charm of this place remains intact.

The hotel is located 200m from the city’s central square where the old spires of the cathedral, Stephansdom, shoot up. There aren’t many other places that sport the Viennese brand of quirkiness like this hotel.

FOR THE BOUTIQUE TRAVELLER ON A BUDGET

25 Hours Hotel

Where: Lerchenfelder Straße 1–3, 1070

This personality-packed hotel is part of chain that is spread all over the German-speaking lands, but this fact steals nothing from its individuality. The 25 Hours Hotel is fun, funky and full of character. It also has room rates that reach from medium range to low – there’s an option there for all boutique traveller’s budgets.

The beds are super comfy, some of the glass shower doors are transparent (a kinky extra option), and yoga mats come with most rooms – you get the picture, it’s a hipster’s heaven. Other essentials for the urbanite traveller, like a wireless boom box and free bike rental are included, while some rooms even have standalone bathtubs. And the rooftop bar the hotel’s crowned with is the perfect place to put a full stop to everyday with a drink in hand – there’s one of the best view of the city up there.

Hotel am Brilliantengrund

Where: Bandgasse 4, 1070

When the creative crowd took over this old canary yellow hotel, only good things could happen. And they did. It’s been named one of the best hotels to stay in by The New York Times, and earned the praise of many who have graced its pillows with their heads.

If you’re a fan of the retro look, you’ll like Brillantengrund. It boasts the cool of Tarantino’s earlier films, but also carries the warmth of a family-run hotel (that may have something to do with the fact that it is one). The rooms surround a seemingly sweet courtyard, located on a balcony fringed 2nd floor. The rooms are full of vintage furniture from its past life.

Their restaurant serves up fantastic Pinoy food and once you’ve tried that, you’ll find a wealth of cafes and bars in the surrounding neighbourhood that’s known for its hip scene. Brillantengrund is a brilliant option for those on a budget, but who like to stay in some place special.
